A Few Elite Zip Codes Overwhelm Diverse Codes in Political Giving
EveryVoice’s research team has crunched the numbers and put together a fantastic report on early presidential fundraising. Among some of the most startling findings are:
- Half of the $74 million in large individual donations raised directly by the top 10 candidates came from 1 percent of the country’s zip codes.
- The typical income level for the top 10 direct giving zip codes is twice the national average ($110,000), and home values are five times higher on average ($890,000).
- Donors from the Upper East and Upper West sides of Central Park gave more to presidential candidates than all 1,200 majority African-American zip codes in the country. They also gave more than all1,300 majority Hispanic or Latino zip codes in the country.
- It only takes one super PAC mega-donor giving more than $1.3 million to surpass the candidate donations from all majority black zip codes in the country. There were 19 such donors in our analysis.
- 50% of large donations to presidential candidates came from only 1% of zip codes
- Priorities! 3 zip codes around Central Park gave more to pres. candidates than ALL majority black zip codes
- White & wealthy vastly overrepresented in presidential donations, but it doesn’t have to be this way
