“It’s been 35 years since Adlai Stevenson III lost the closest gubernatorial election in Illinois history — but don’t tell him that.
‘I still haven’t conceded, by the way,’ Stevenson, 86, joked Wednesday.
The former U.S. senator and his wife, Nancy, were honored by the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform for what old friends and allies described as the Stevensons’ lifelong commitment to good government.
Stevenson lost the 1982 governor’s race by just 0.14 percent — 5,074 votes — to Republican James R. Thompson, and many attending a lunch where he and his wife were handed the Mikva Legacy Award for Truth and Justice are still smarting more than three decades later that he was denied a recount. (Stevenson did, in fact, concede after the Illinois Supreme Court denied him that recount.)”
