In the Gettysburg Address delivered at Soldiers’ National Cemetery in the middle of the Civil War, President Lincoln said the dead had given “the last full measure of devotion” to preserve the United States.

The soldiers had upheld the principle of equality — the foundation of a representative democracy, Lincoln said. To ensure that they did not die in vain, he said, the living must resolve that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
