Bags With State Treasurer’s Name On, But Not Across, Line

Via The State Journal-Register:

“State Treasurer Michael Frerichs runs the I-Cash program that returns unclaimed property, including money, left in safe-deposit boxes and bank accounts.

But is it appropriate for Frerichs, a Democrat and former state senator, to use state money to print tote bags  including his name  to promote the program? According to one watchdog group I contacted, the treasurer’s office did not cross a legal line.

“Generally, we don’t support any elected official including their name on promotional items paid for by public funds,” said Sarah Brune, deputy director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. “However, we do not believe that these bags violate the statute as they clearly advertise the treasurer’s (I-Cash) program. I would say this is on the line but not over it.”
