Bernard Schoenburg: Griffin’s $2.5 million to Rauner spotlights big donors
From the State Journal Register
It seems so quaint now that Illinois lawmakers imposed campaign donation limits in a law that took full effect at the beginning of 2011.
Yes, those limits are still affecting many state and local races, where individuals can’t give more than $5,300 per election to a candidate. But in the race for governor, such limits are far in the rearview mirror.
That’s because the law allows the caps to be busted by certain big donations, including when a statewide candidate donates at least $250,000 to his or her own effort.
Well, Republican gubernatorial candidate BRUCE RAUNER long ago crossed that threshold and has now spent more than $6 million on his own campaign.
