The candidates and their allies again spent millions of dollars trying to get elected.
At the top of the spending chart for Illinois’ 2014 election is the governor’s race, which saw roughly $100 million spent in the contest between Republican challenger Bruce Rauner and incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn. Rauner, a wealthy businessman, put about $30 million of his own money into his winning effort, but also had support from outside groups. Quinn, however, got help from outside groups such as labor unions, and was roughly able to match the overall Rauner spending effort.
Quinn’s ads criticized Rauner for his wealth, but experts say Rauner’s wealth may have been a plus in the minds of voters. Rauner, on the campaign trail, often said he couldn’t be bought.
