“Cheers to the Rock Island County voters who OK’d a 1 cent sales tax increase to finance school construction, and to put our school facilities on a level playing field with surrounding counties.
It’s about curb appeal, of course. It’s important how our schools look when newcomers are trying to choose where to put down roots in our bistate area or when young families are buying that first home or growing ones are searching for a larger place to call home.
We’ve been at a major disadvantage to Iowa schools for years as they have taken advantage of a 1 percent sales tax to do amazing things that districts on this side of the river simply could not afford to duplicate. Henry County already has seen what the 1 cent school facilities sales tax can finance in the plans for a new facility in Geneseo. We’re hungry for some of that in RICo.”
