Chicago businessman donates $1.6 billion in dark money to conservative non-profit
A Chicago businessman just quietly gave the largest reported donation ever to a political nonprofit. Barre Seid, former CEO of electrical product manufacturing company Tripp Lite, has donated $1.6 billion to Marble Freedom, the conservative advocacy group credited with helping President Trump put justices on the US Supreme Court. In an unprecedented move, Seid has made the group’s leader, co-Chair of the Federalist Society Leonard Leo, one of the most powerful players in national politics. In response, RFI Executive Director Alisa Kaplan says that “I hope this is a wakeup call, not just at the national level, but at the state level, to pay more attention to dark money spending.”
