Court nullifies Evanston RCV referendum
The Evanston RoundTable spoke with RFI Board President David Melton after a Cook County Circuit Court judge nullified Evanston’s 2022 referendum adopting ranked-choice voting for local elections.
“The opinion does not acknowledge the fact that under Section 6f of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution, home rule units like the City of Evanston have the right to select the manner in which their elected representatives are chosen, and this is a referendum seeking to exercise that power. We think that the court struggled to find an ambiguity where there was none, seemingly to justify a ruling striking down the referendum.”
