Digital signatures would help candidates stay on the ballot in Illinois
RFI ED Alisa Kaplan spoke with Center for Illinois Politics’ Eric Krol about ballot access in Illinois and how incumbents routinely benefit from this cumbersome system.
“It really ends up being an additional barrier for people, especially for more independent candidates. That’s bad for political competition, and anything that’s bad for political competition is bad for voters,” she said.
“The digital signatures would help a lot,” Kaplan said. Of the seven top reasons the Illinois Democratic County chairs’ group lists for candidates getting knocked off a ballot, “digital signatures would address five of them.”
