Editorial: Big Money Donors Unduly Influence Elections

More than $12 million was funneled to candidates this past week vying for the Georgia congressional campaign advertised as a referendum on President Trump. J.B. Pritzker, the Democrat who wants to be the next governor of Illinois, donated $7 million this month to his fledgling campaign fund.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has nearly $51 million stashed away for his re-election campaign. The Republican billionaire governor has indicated he’s willing to kick in more. Already, he’s running television commercials in the expensive Chicago television market. More than $6.5 billion was spent in the 2016 presidential and congressional campaigns.

Our hand-wringing undoubtedly will fall on deaf ears because the people who can fix this are too narcissistic and worried about self-preservation and getting re-elected to care. But it needs to be said anyway.
