Editorial: Housing Authority Relationship Might Not Be Wrong, But It Doesn’t Seem Right

“Innovation, sustainability, transforming communities and leveraging resources are some of the goals of the 2007 Housing and Urban Development memo that laid the groundwork for the creation of Northern Lights Development Corp., a nonprofit that is affiliated with the Aurora Housing Authority.

These also are the buzzwords of modern progress, the kinds of things we often applaud when out-of-date methods are scrapped in an effort to improve efficiency and use resources wisely. That doesn’t make them foolproof, though.

The Housing Authority and Northern Lights share some leadership, resources and goals. But one is a public agency charged with spending federal dollars to provide housing for low-income Aurorans. The other is a newly nonprofit operation that works independently to redevelop or manage properties, sometimes competing with private companies for public contracts. Sometimes, this outfit — overseen by the same people awarding the contracts — even beats out private companies that have submitted lower bids.”
