“Former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar on Tuesday decried what he said was a lack of civility in government and said he’d spoken more frequently with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan than he has GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner.
Edgar made his remarks during an event about Illinois’ future put on by the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. The former governor, who served two terms during the 1990s, spoke as impasse centered on the political fight between Rauner and Madigan has left the state without a full spending plan for a record 11 months and shows little signs of easing up.
Without naming Rauner, Edgar criticized politicians who label their adversaries as ignorant or crooked. Rauner has used the term “corrupt” to describe both Madigan and Democratic Senate President John Cullerton.”
