Illinois Campaign Forecast: Expensive with Negative Ads

“Illinois politicians say that based on Tuesday’s primary election, they expect higher spending, more negative advertising and more uncertainty leading up to November’s general election.

State Sen. Sam McCann, R-Plainfield, expects the gubernatorial race between Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic challenger J.B. Pritzker to be the most expensive governor’s race ever. Rauner spent about $50 million during the primary cycle. Pritzker spent about $70 million, according to financial disclosure forms. Both men used their personal wealth to cover those costs.

“Almost certainly we’ll see the most expensive governor’s race in the nation’s history, and I think negativity will probably rule the day,” McCann said.”
