“Things were looking good for North Chicago aldermanic candidate Paula Carballido in January, when a city electoral panel ruled in favor of her challenge to incumbent Ald. Kathy January’s nomination papers. January’s name would not appear on the ballot in the April 4 election for 7th Ward alderman, the panel decided.
As a result, January had to run as a write-in contender, and Carballido’s was the only name on the ballot for the position.
Write-in candidates typically face an uphill battle because of their decreased visibility, and January only received five votes in the election, according to results posted by the Lake County clerk’s office Wednesday morning that included provisional and late-arriving mail-in ballots.”
