New Illinois election law expands party war chests, leaves voters vulnerable to misinformation
State legislators passed a measure in May which removed restrictions on campaign contributions from political parties to candidates during primaries, which was recently signed into law by Gov. Pritzker. RFI ED Alisa Kaplan shared her thoughts on the new law with The Center Square.
She called the removal of primary contribution caps “significant,” saying that it reflects party leaders’ intent to gain more control over primary elections. Regarding urgent concerns over deepfake election communications disclosures which were omitted from the new law, Kaplan notes “there were concerns from both sides of the aisle and there were obvious concerns for democracy and our election but somehow it didn’t make it in”.
