“Like good medicine, a good election first should do no harm. Yes, the pols will brawl and say nasty things about each other and their backers. But after the vote is over and a winner declared, the idea is to come together and heal those wounds because this still is one nation and it needs to be led.
This year’s election—mostly the presidential race, though it spills into Illinois contests—threatens to do some lasting harm.
Let’s stipulate that neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump is about to win a popularity contest. So what? With the exceptions of Barack Obama’s “Hope” campaign of 2008 and Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America” pitch in 1984, national races for a long time have been about choosing the lesser of two evils.”
