Questions Remain About New Mexico’s Political Honor

“One lesson coming out of the recent Dianna Duran scandal is that New Mexico’s system of campaign finance reporting is a sad joke.
In case you haven’t been paying attention to the news for the past couple of weeks, Duran — who at this writing is still the secretary of state — is charged with multiple criminal counts including embezzlement and tampering with state records. Among those charges are allegations that she falsified her campaign finance reports, failing to report some contributions and underreporting others in an alleged attempt to skirt contribution limits.
And the big irony here is that the secretary of state is the one responsible for overseeing campaign finance reports and other areas of election law in the state.”
