Quinn names longtime aide Stermer to succeed Topinka as comptroller

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn on Friday appointed longtime aide Jerry Stermer to succeed the late Judy Baar Topinka as Illinois comptroller.

Stermer will serve as the primary keeper of the state’s checkbook until Jan. 12, according to the Quinn administration. After that, Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner is sworn in and gets to appoint a new comptroller to serve at least part of the new term Topinka was elected to last month.
