When Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office acknowledged that he had made $400,000 in campaign contributions to Republican members of the state Legislature, it opened up a familiar debate.
What is the role of money in Illinois politics? Rauner has spoken at length about the corrupting influence of special interests. If that is true, then pouring another pot of money into Springfield strikes many as a strange cure, at best, or simply business as usual.

A lot of money flows into Springfield during a typical spring legislative session. Since March 1, 1,363 contributions of $1,000 or more—with a total value topping $4 million—have been disclosed by legislators, constitutional officers and state political parties.
