“Abner Mikva, a legendary figure in Illinois politics whose nearly 70-year career took him from the Illinois House to Congress and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, died Monday at age 90.

In addition to his extensive political and legal career, Mikva was known for his work in reforming politics in his home state and for serving as a model to dozens of political aspirants. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.

Mikva was the source of one of the most accurate and concise summaries of the political attitude in Chicago circa 1948 when he recounted a ward boss declining his offer to volunteer for the campaigns of Adlai Stevenson and Paul Douglas. ‘We don’t want nobody that nobody sent,’ Mikva was told.”
