RFI ED talks Illinois’ struggle to fill vacancies on public boards
The Chicago Tribune reported on a state audit revealing Illinois’ struggles to fill state board and commission positions. RFI ED Alisa Kaplan expressed disappointment that boards aren’t operating at full capacity.
“Often task forces and commissions are created by legislation to placate constituencies or kick the can down the road.” Kaplan says she “[doesn’t] think most vacancies happen for any sinister reason,” rather, she thinks most individuals want to stay out of “the line of fire” that comes with public positions. Whatever the cause may be for position vacancies, Kaplan states that it “undermines the public’s trust to have a bunch of commissions that are supposed to be doing a job for them and aren’t.”
