It shouldn’t take a government photo ID to exercise one’s right to vote

On Friday, three Republican-appointed federal judges in Chicago gave Wisconsin a green light to require government-issued photo IDs before people can vote in the November election. The decision could be a recipe for a disaster.
Last April, U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman rejected Wisconsin’s law, saying it would be a burden for poor and minority voters who might not have such IDs. Friday’s action didn’t overrule that, but the judges said Wisconsin can require IDs until the matter is settled by the courts, which could be long after the election.
