“As the 2016 election season finally—and thankfully—comes to an end, we now have an idea of how much the sucker cost: at least $328 million, just in Illinois, mostly for General Assembly seats.
That staggering figure comes from the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, which totaled up individual contributions and transfers from political committees that candidates received from the March 16 primary through yesterday. Clearly driving it all is the unprecedented clash between Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Mike Madigan.
There is a little double-counting in ICPR’s accounting. For instance, Comptroller Leslie Munger received at least $3 million that she passed on to other candidates. But there’s no question the cash influx is going to blow through all the records for Illinois.”
