“Illinois was preparing to enact its first-ever campaign contribution limits law when the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission changed the rules of the game completely.
The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform hosted a panel discussion on Tuesday to talk about campaign finance reforms passed more than five years ago in response to the abuses exposed in the Rod Blagojevich scandal and how they’ve affected elections in Illinois today.
The 2011 law, among other things, placed limits on campaign contributions for the first time in state history, capping donations to political candidates to $5,400 from individuals, $10,800 from corporations, unions or trade associations, and $53,900 from another candidate’s political fund or political action committee.”
